Job Purpose:

The Production Shift Manager is a vital part of the Production Management Team, responsible for efficiently and cost-effectively managing the day-to-day Production operations in the fabrication/manufacturing facility to meet production targets. They collaborate with the Manufacturing Manager, Sales Order Processing, Customer Service and Transport teams to plan and coordinate production schedules, ensure stock control, supervise and motivate the Production team, and uphold health and safety standards

 

The Production Shift Manager plays a crucial role in meeting customer demands, maintaining quality standards by promising a ‘right first time’ approach, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Key Duties:

  • Oversee the entire production process, meeting operational and customer demands efficiently. Ensure suitable work force planning for maintaining synchronisation with production schedules
  • Lead Production Supervisors/Team/Cell Leaders, and Production Operatives to ensure adherence to standard operating procedures and maximise productivity, fostering a positive and productive work environment
  • Manage and coach team performance, workforce planning, training, development, and succession planning in line with team targets, ensuring all Production staff reach their highest potential and optimum performance levels
  • Resolve employee relations issues in compliance with HR policies and procedures in liaison with the HR team, ensuring optimal performance levels
  • Support the Manufacturing Manager by collaborating across shifts to plan and coordinate production schedules, considering customer orders and optimising resource utilisation
  • Promote a ‘right first time’ approach and a zero tolerance mindset for deviations from quality processes among the Production team to achieve customer deliverables and minimise defects and waste, ensuring customer orders are met on time and in full while minimising wastage
  • Collaborate with the Sales Order processing, Customer Services, and Distribution teams to fulfil customer orders. Oversee the resolution of customer queries and complaints within Production including planning remakes and backlog items
  • Maintain and track key metrics/KPIs, including process documentation, customer service logs, training and health and safety records to monitor production performance. Drive the team to meet targets by ensuring the use of short internal controls
  • Lead department meetings and represent Production at operational meetings, liaising with other department leads, raising potential issues early, escalating concerns where further support is required, and collaborating to find solutions. Provide feedback and updates to the Production Team
  • Design, implement, review and maintain system improvements, change management processes, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production efficiency and streamline processes
  • Manage inventory levels and collaborate with the Inventory Manager, utilising stock control systems for Material requirements planning to maintain adequate raw material levels
  • Promote the importance of Lean manufacturing principles and ensure site organisation and housekeeping by storing materials, tools, finished products, and equipment in designated areas, conducting inspections of production areas for compliance with SOPs and H&S, and ensuring smooth operations
  • Monitor and inspect finished products for defects, ensuring they meet quality specifications
  • Lead the team in a safe, secure and compliant environment by operating within Company systems, policies and procedures
  • Lead by example, promoting teamwork, professionalism, and the company’s vision and values
  • Prepare daily Delivery schedules and loads, to support logistics and guarantee the right products are delivered on time

 


Person Specification:

  • Strong leadership skills to effectively lead and supervise a fabrication/manufacturing team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to interact with Production Supervisors, Cell Team Leaders, Production Operatives, and other stakeholders
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions promptly
  • A thorough understanding of fabrication/manufacturing procedures, processes, operating machinery and equipment used to ensure efficient production
  • Adaptability and flexibility to handle dynamic production schedules and changing priorities
  • Organisational skills to manage and prioritise tasks within the production area effectively
  • A commitment to safety protocols and regulations in a manufacturing setting
  • Attention to detail and a ‘right first time’ attitude

 

Essential Experience:

  • Proven experience in a management role, overseeing and leading teams in a fabrication/manufacturing setting
  • Familiarity with production targets and quality standards in a fabrication/manufacturing environment 
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations pertaining to the operation of machinery and equipment
  • Experience in coordinating with cross functional teams to achieve production goals
  • Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft programs. Comfortable learning new systems

 

Desirable Experience:

  • A wealth of previous experience in fabrication or manufacturing environments, particularly experience in a related industry
  • Relevant vocational or technical qualification related to manufacturing or fabrication
  • Prior experience in training and developing Production teams to improve skills and performance
  • Experience enhancing production planning and scheduling processes to optimise resource utilisation
  • Basic understanding of Employment Law, such as the Working Time Directive
  • Familiarity with Lean/5S manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience in implementing process improvements to enhance production efficiency

 

What we offer:

Salary: £41,600 pa 

Hours: Monday to Friday 1.45pm – 10.15pm

Location: Norwich, Lenwade
